Four people were killed and more than 100 injured in India-controlled Kashmir Friday after police and paramilitary troopers fired on protesters at several places, officials Saturday said.

Authorities fearing spreading of clashes Saturday imposed curfew in most towns of Muslim majority areas of the region including Srinagar city, the summer capital of India-controlled Kashmir.

Two of the deaths occurred in Pattan town of Baramulla district, around 38 km northwest of Srinagar.

Police officials said hundreds of protesters attacked police station and set ablaze a building and two vehicles in its compound. During the clashes 14-year-old Mohammed Rafiq Bhat and 23-year-old Nazir Ahmed Mir were hit by bullets allegedly fired by policemen at Pattan police station.

"Teenager Bhat had died on spot but Mir succumbed to injuries Friday late night in hospital," said a doctor.

Earlier during the day a 45-year-old Muhammad Ahsan Ganai and 25-year-old Showkat Ahmed Wagay were killed and several others injured after police and paramilitary troopers fired to break an anti-Indian protest demonstration at Amargarh village of Sopore town, around 50-km northwest of Srinagar city.

The deaths have pushed the region back on the edge after a lull of 10 days.

Friday's killings have taken the death toll of civilians to 21 in police and paramilitary action since June 11.

Friday morning protests broke out in Srinagar city in which four people sustained injuries. Of the injured, the condition of one is stated to be critical.

Newspapers reports suggest more than 100 people including some policemen were injured across the region Friday during clashes.

Reports pouring in from Amargarh-Sopore and Pattan said fresh protests broke out in Saturday morning.

Meanwhile, thousands of policemen and India's paramilitary Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel have been deployed along the streets and roads of Srinagar city in full riot gear to enforce restrictions. These men have laid barricades and concertina on roads and intersections to restrict civilian movement.
