We also note that this year marks the 80th anniversary of the U.N.'s establishment. Facing endless emerging global challenges, some believe that multilateral mechanisms, represented by the U.N., have fallen short of fulfilling their responsibilities. May I ask how you view the status and role of the U.N.?

Ma Zhaoxu:

As you may recall, China was the first country to sign the U.N. Charter. Over the past 80 years, the U.N. has embodied the earnest aspirations of people worldwide for peace and development. To this day, the U.N. remains the most universal, authoritative and representative intergovernmental international organization.

Eighty years have passed, and human civilization has achieved remarkable progress, yet the beautiful vision articulated in the U.N. Charter remains far from fully realized. In particular, certain countries pursue unilateralism, withdraw from treaties and organizations, and treat the U.N. as something to be used when convenient and discarded otherwise, thereby severely undermining the international order and system. A series of major crises in recent years has repeatedly shown us that the role of the U.N. can only be strengthened, not weakened. Its status must be upheld, not replaced. Whether the U.N. can fulfill its due role depends entirely on whether member states honor the purposes and principles of the U.N. Charter and comply with international law and the basic norms governing international relations. At the same time, the U.N. needs reform and improvement to more effectively address global challenges and strengthen the representation and voice of developing countries in international affairs.

President Xi Jinping's major concept of building a community of shared future for humanity is highly aligned with the purposes and principles of the U.N. Charter. China has taken the lead in practicing true multilateralism and firmly supports the U.N. in playing a central role in international affairs. Under the U.N. framework, China has made important contributions to addressing important issues through political solutions, reforming the international economic and financial systems, safeguarding the interests of developing countries and tackling global challenges such as climate change. U.N. Secretary-General António Guterres has repeatedly stated that China is a cornerstone of international cooperation and multilateralism.

As the UN prepares to begin its next 80 years, China is willing to work together with all parties to strengthen the U.N.'s role and build a more just and reasonable global governance system. Thank you.
