China said Tuesday that the United Nations Human Rights Council's (UNHRC) move to hold a debate on Syria should help ease tensions in the violence-wracked country.

"China always holds that human rights disputes should be appropriately addressed through constructive dialogue and cooperation," Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei said at a regular news briefing in response to a question on the UNHRC's latest move. At the 19th session of the UNHRC on Monday, the body decided to hold an urgent debate on Syria on Tuesday.

Hong said China believes that the UNHRC's move should help to ease tensions in Syria, spur political dialogue, and resolve disputes between all the parties concerned in the Syrian issue.

"The Chinese side is willing to make joint efforts with the international community and play a positive and constructive role in appropriately solving the Syrian issue," he said.

As for the referendum on a new constitution in Syria, Hong said China hoped the results of the referendum would help advance the reform and start political dialogue in Syria to echo its citizens' legitimate requests and concerns.

The Syrian government announced on Monday that over 57 percent of the country's voters cast their ballots and that the constitution was approved with more than 89 percent of the vote.

"We also hope that all the parties concerned in Syria will make joint efforts to ease tensions in the country," he added.
