China on Monday said it will work with Japan to promote mutually beneficial strategic relations after Japan's prime minister sent a positive signal.

"We noted Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda's comments on promoting strategic and mutually beneficial relations between China and Japan, and we would like to make joint efforts with Japan," Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hong Lei said at a daily press briefing on Monday.

Hong's comment came days after Noda said on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly that he would work with China to stabilize and deepen ties that have been upset by territorial disputes and wartime history.

Hong said China and Japan should follow the four political documents between the two countries, promote mutually-beneficial cooperation in all fields and aim for the steady growth of bilateral relations.
