More than 1 million people gathered in downtown Cairo on Friday to observe the victory of their mass protests which forced President Hosni Mubarak to resign on Feb. 11.

The Tahrir (Liberation) Square in downtown Cairo, the epicenter of the 18-day protests since Jan. 25, was crowded with Egyptians from different walks of life. They waved national flags and shouting slogans such as "Long live Egypt."

The massive crowds expressed their needs of change and reform and the hope of national development, in addition to their objection against the National Democratic Party (NDP) led by former President Mubarak.

The country's supreme council of armed forces has been taking control of the governance of the state affairs after the departure of Mubarak who is reportedly still in the Red Sea resort of Sharm El-Sheikh.

A committee for the amendments of the constitution has been formed and will finish the task within 10 days. The amendments will then be submitted to a national referendum.

The military has pledged to transfer the power to an elected civilian government in six months or after the parliamentary and presidential elections are held.
