The Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) has not responded to South Korea's offer of flood aid worth 10 billion won (8.3 million U.S. dollars) to its northern neighbor, the government in Seoul said Wednesday.

South Korea's Red Cross offered Tuesday to provide food, medical supplies and other emergency relief goods to the flood-hit DPRK. The Seoul-based organization has been a key channel of humanitarian cooperation between the two Koreas.

"Red Cross will prepare for the aid while waiting for North Korea (DPRK)'s response," unification ministry spokeswoman Lee Jong-joo told a press briefing. Four other civic groups are awaiting government approval for sending separate flood aid to the DPRK, she added.

Seoul has suspended sending government-level aid to Pyongyang since May after South Korea blamed Pyongyang for sinking a South Korean warship on March 26. The DPRK denied the charge.

The South Korean government has repeatedly said it will continue humanitarian assistance to its northern neighbor.
