Any action taken by the United Nations should not punish the Iranian people nor impact their normal lives, said Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Jiang Yu on Thursday.

Jiang made the remarks in regards to the upcoming United Nations Security Council's vote on new sanctions against Iran.

"The UN action should help resolve the Iranian nuclear issue through dialogue and negotiation," Jiang said.

The vote on the resolution against Iran over its nuclear program is expected soon, possibly within 10 days, according to Mexico's UN ambassador Claude Heller.

Heller, who is also president of the council this month, said experts from the 15 member nations have been discussing the US-drafted resolution and the panel's 10 non-permanent members are waiting for the list of individuals and firms that will be singled out for sanction.

The resolution, if passed, will be the fourth round of sanctions against Iran for its refusal to suspend uranium enrichment. Five UN permanent Security Council members - China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom and the United States - together with Germany reached a consensus last month.

The US State Department has urged the council to vote on its new sanctions resolution by June 21.

"The vote on the draft proposal does not mean the door to diplomatic efforts is closed," Jiang said, adding that China adheres to the dual-track strategy on resolving the issue.

Iran now possesses more than 2,400 kilograms of uranium enriched to 3 to 3.5 percent, enough to produce two nuclear warheads, according to a report by the International Atomic Energy Agency on Tuesday.

Manouchehr Mottaki, Iran's foreign minister, said on Tuesday the efforts to approve new UN sanctions on Iran are confrontational and destructive and will ruin opportunities. He urged the international community to accept the swap agreement between Iran, Turkey and Brazil.

Iran's parliamentary speaker Ali Larijani said to a group of foreign visitors on Wednesday, "If they issue a hundred other resolutions, it will not stop our peaceful activities."
