Ousted Kyrgyz President Kurmanbek Bakiyev said on Tuesday he would resign only if the interim government ensures his and his family's safety, the RIA Novosti news agency reported.

"I will resign if my and my relatives' security is guaranteed firstly. Second, if order (in the country) is guaranteed and roaming the streets with guns stops," Bakiyev said as quoted by RIA.

Bakiyev, who had refused to return to the capital Bishkek, invited interim leader Roza Otunbayeva to his hometown in the southern province of Jalalabad for talks, the report said.

"I will not go to Bishkek. Let Otunbayeva come for talks. We will ensure her safety," Bakiyev said.

But interim officials may have no intention of negotiating with Bakiyev, the Interfax news agency reported, citing a source in the interim government.

The Kyrgyz interim government on Tuesday issued an ultimatum for Bakiyev to surrender hours after it abolished his presidential immunity.
