Homes turned to ruins. Hundreds of aftershocks followed, seven of them above three on the Richter scale. Thousands of families have lost their homes. Thousands of troops and firefighters rush to find survivors.

The rescue work is hard because the hill was dislocated by the tremor. More than 1,000 people were injured.

Some are being treated locally; some of the severely injured have been flown by helicopter to the provincial capital where the hospital has set up exclusive wards for earthquake injuries.

Local authorities have distributed drinking water, instant noodles and tents to villagers. A quarter of a million people have been moved to safer areas.
