An escalator accident at a Beijing subway stop has left 1 person dead and 28 others injured, two of them seriously.

The accident happened around 9:30am at the exit of the Beijing Zoo Station on Subway Line 4. The municipal government's information office said some people on the escalator fell down after an escalator malfunction.

Beijing MTR Corporation, operator of the line, posted a brief statement about the accident on its website.

The company said it has already launched an emergency response and all injured people have been sent to the hospital. A probe has begun over the cause of the accident.
