On the men's side, there were no major surprises as top seeds Rafael Nadal and Andy Roddick advanced.

And the comeback stars on the womens' side are moving on: Kim Clijsters and Justin Henin both showed they may make some noise down under this year.

Rafael Nadal dispelled any concerns over his fitness and form at the Australian Open. He faced Slovakia's Lukas Lacko in the second round.

The Spaniard showed he was starting to get back to his best with an effortless 6-2, 6-2, 6-2 win in 1 hour and 52 minutes.
