Traditional Chinese handicraft skills are fully demonstrated at an exhibition in Beijing. As usual, visitors can enjoy many works of art, but here, they can also discuss techniques with the artists or even make something themselves.
Professional cloisonne makers perform their metalworking techniques on location, offering a interactive view of the whole process from raw material, to completed work of art.
The ancient technique for making Cloisonne is a multi-step enamel process including body-making, filigree-soldering, enamel-filling, firing, polishing, and gilding. It can be used to produce jewelry, vases, and other decorative items.
This visitor is encouraged to join professionals in trying it herself.
Apart from cloisonne, there are also exquisite hand-made embroideries. These are characterized by the running and cross-stitch techniques that bring out the beauty and refinement of the Chinese sewing tradition.
Stealing the limelight at the show is "Hua Si Xiang Qian", an art form that attaches copper filaments to the body of a piece, based on the blueprint of the design.
You can see these handicrafts free of charge at the Exhibition Hall of Artistic Treasures of the Chinese Nation through September 18th.
Organizers say they hope the show will offer an opportunity for the general public to savor a taste of Chinese folk culture.
