China says it supports the reform of UN peacekeeping operations and has urged member states to reach consensus on the issue.
China's deputy permanent representative to the UN, Liu Zhenmin, made the remarks during an address to the Security Council.
Liu said over the past 60 years, the UN peacekeeping operations have made great contributions to world peace and security. But he says it is facing new challenges in areas such as policy, financial support, planning and management.
Liu made a five-point proposition on peacekeeping reform.
He said the UN should pay close attention to developing an integrated strategy on conflict prevention and resolution. It must also balance upgrades with an adherence to basic principles, and improve the Security Council's management of peacekeeping operations. It must also ensure adequate resources and address the special needs of Africa.
Liu also said China supports a wide-ranging consultation between member states and relevant parties in a bid to reach consensus and advance the reform of UN peacekeeping operations.
