Situated at the intersection of the Changbai Mountains and Songnen Plain, Jilin city is a key water conservation area on the Songhua River. The city has developed multiple high-quality winter tourism resorts thanks to its natural snow, rimed trees, beautiful scenery, immense forests and hot springs. 

It also hosts high-level winter sports competitions, including the Freestyle Ski World Championships, China's national hockey league and ice dragon boat racing.
