The term "metaverse" first appeared in Neal Stephenson's 1992 science fiction novel "Snow Crash." In October this year, Facebook rebranded its corporate name to Meta, making this futuristic but vaguely defined concept even more popular. The situation is no different in China as everyone from tech giants such as Tencent and Baidu to startups races to plant their flags in the virtual space.
