Champions League: Barcelona Broken, Liverpool Jubilant
Adjust font size:
Title holders Barcelona nabbed a 1-0 victory at Anfield on Tuesday but this was not enough and Liverpool slid through to the Champions League quarterfinals thanks to away goals after a 2-2 aggregate score.

2004 winners Porto also bid the competition goodbye after Chelsea staged a strong comeback to win 2-1 at Stamford Bridge for a 3-2 aggregate result.

AS Roma breezed past Olympique Lyon 2-0, the first home defeat in 19 Champions League games for the French champions. For their part, Valencia drew 0-0 with Inter Milan, going through after their first leg 2-2 draw.

Anfield has seen many memorable European matches down the years but last night's glee, despite the game ending in defeat, will remain in the hearts and minds of the Kop faithful.

Liverpool shot forward from kick-off, looking to put the tie beyond doubt, raining shots down on the Barcelona goal. Goalkeeper Victor Valdes’s heroic display kept the Spaniards in the game but the rest of the team were sluggish, failing to convert their chances until substitute Eidur Gudjohnsen finally scored in 75 minutes.

The four remaining second-leg matches will be played on Wednesday when Manchester United and Arsenal will seek to put four teams from the same country in the quarter-finals of the Champions League for the first time.
