On Day 5 of the London Olympics, a total of 20 gold medals were dished out. And this time China took 4 golds bringing the total to 17. China still ranks first in the medal tally.

On day 5, the first gold medal came from the men's synchronized 3m springboard event. The Chinese pair Luo Yutong and Qin Kai surged into the lead to finish over 17 points ahead of their nearest rivals. They pocketed the medal with a total score of 477 points.

With 4 wins out of 4 events, the Chinese are on track to win all 8 of the diving events and improve on their performance in Beijing where they won seven.

Table tennis offered China a gold and a silver today. China's Li Xiaoxia defeated top favourite, world number one Ding Ning, also from China, in the women's singles table tennis for the gold.

It was also the 21st Olympic gold medal that China won in table tennis since the game was introduced at the 1988 Seoul Games.

China also swept the Olympic gold and silver medals in the men's 77-kilogram weightlifting category. The champion Lu Xiaojun lifted 175 kilograms in the snatch, bettering his own world mark by 1 kilogram. He then lifted 204 kilograms in his final clean and jerk for a world record total of 379 kilograms. Lu Hao-jie, also from China, claimed the silver medal.

Another gold medal came from the pool. Jiao Liu-yang clocked just over 2-minutes and 4-seconds to win the women's 200m butterfly gold medal. Jiao was second when she turned for home but surged clear of her rivals to win and add the Olympic gold to the world title she won last year.

In women's 25 meter pistol, the defending Chinese champion Chen Ying lost to her rival from the South Korea and claimed a silver medal for China.
