The Brazilian government will begin on Friday compiling a database of all members of fan clubs in Sao Paulo as part of a vast security network in the build up to the 2014 World Cup.

The scheme, which was launched at the end of last month in the southern region of Parana, will see all members of 475 supporters clubs throughout the country registered, Sports Ministry official Alcino Rocha said.

Its success will be tested during the 2013 Confederations Cup, also in Brazil.

"It's obvious that registration alone will not resolve (the problem of violence) but it's a necessary step ultimately to identify the fanatic who could be implicated in acts of violence in or around stadiums," said Rocha.
