Wheelchair Tennis Day 7 Preview: Vergeer heads to her third Paralympic title
Adjust font size:

Dutch champion Esther Vergeer could win her third Paralympic Wheelchair Tennis Singles title at the Olympic Green Tennis Centre on Sunday, September 13.

Women's Singles - Open

World No.1 and two-time Paralympic Games Women's Singles champion, Esther Vergeer of the Netherlands will play against fellow Dutchwoman, second seed Korie Homan in the gold medal match on Sunday. Homan is a relative newcomer to the game, having made her debut in 2003. If Vergeer succeeds, she will win an unprecedented third Paralympic title.

Quad Singles - Open

The gold medal match will see the Quad Singles champion, Peter Norfolk of Great Britain, play for his second gold medal. He won the Quad division's first gold medal at Athens 2004 Paralympic Games.

Fourth seed Johan Andersson of Sweden will take up the challenge against Norfolk. Although it is Andersson's first Paralympics, he is set to secure Sweden's first Wheelchair Tennis medal. He has already conquered top seed and Athens silver medalist David Wagner in the semifinals to make it into the final.

Men's Doubles - Open

The gold medal match will be fought out between fourth seeds Stefan Olsson and Peter Wikstrom of Sweden and second seeds Stephane Houdet and Michael Jeremiasz of France. Olsson and Wikstrom had a surprise three-set victory over top seeds Kunieda Shingo and Saida Satoshi of Japan in the semifinal. They will be hoping that their luck and skill will deliver them the gold.

Jeremiasz was part of the French team which won silver at the Athens 2004 Paralympic Games, whereas Houdet is playing in his first Paralympic Games.

Kunieda and Saida will not see a repeat of their gold medal win at Athens. Having lost to the Swedish team on Saturday, they will play Dutch third seeds Ronald Vink and Maikel Scheffers for the Bronze.

Men's Singles - Open

The bronze medal match will be fought out between two Dutchmen, 11th seed Ronald Vink and sixth seed Maikel Scheffers. Vink may be seeded lower than Scheffers but he has excelled at the Beijing 2008 Paralympic Games, knocking out fourth seed Stephane Houdet of France in the quarterfinal and giving second seed and Athens gold medallist Robin Ammerlaan of France a run for his money in the semifinals.

Women's Doubles - Open

The bronze medal match will take place between third seeds Florence Gravellier and Arlette Racineux of France and fourth seeded Americans Beth Arnoult and Kaitlyn Verfuerth. Gravellier, who competed at the Athens 2004 Paralympic Games, already won bronze in her Singles match at the Beijing Games on Saturday. She will be hoping to repeat the experience in the Doubles, which she says will be her last Paralympic match.
