U.S. First Lady Michelle Obama as well as her mother and two daughters are on a week-long official trip to China. Mrs. Obama has chosen education as the theme of her visit. She will "talk to young people about the power of education to help them achieve their aspirations." Her choice gets to the heart of China-U.S. relationship. It is a stitch in time on a bilateral relationship that had been stained by some very aggressive and wrong moves her husband's administration made in the previous year.

Under a banner the Pivot to Asia strategy, there has been one-sided accusation of cyber attacks, misplaced sympathy of brutal terrorist activities against China, and tacit consent to the ascendance of a Japanese regime denying all past war crimes.

These hostile moves might have effectively shaken the basis of any bilateral relationship. But that is not the case. The only reason for the fact that the China-U.S. relationship can survive waves of hostilities like these is that the Chinese and Americans who are working on improving the relationship at the grassroots level far outnumber those who are damaging it at the top level of the U.S. administration.

Observed from the perspective of educators, the bilateral relationship is in fact very solid, in sharp contrast to the many unpleasant elements conjured up in other fields by some so-called strategists.
