Foreign Minister Li Zhaoxing met in New York with US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly on Monday, and both agreed to further strengthen bilateral ties.
During the meeting, Li said that both countries should put into effect the important consensus reached by President Hu Jintao and US President George W. Bush with regard to advancing the Sino-US constructive partnership in the 21st century. In addition, both sides should ensure the smooth continuation of Sino-US strategic dialogues, and promote bilateral interests.
As to the Taiwan issue, Li said that China appreciates the US stand on the one-China policy and opposing Taiwan independence. China hopes that the US will abide by its commitments and handle the Taiwan issue with care, Li.
For her part, Rice agreed with Li on promoting bilateral interests and reiterated the US stand on the one-China policy.
Li and Rice also discussed other issues including Iran's nuclear issue and the humanitarian crisis in Sudan's Darfur. Both agreed to maintain consultation in this respect.
After meeting with Rice, Li attended a discussion with foreign ministers from India, Brazil, South Africa and Mexico.
