The Tibet Plateau is basically paramos and marshy grasslands, so it is weak in water and soil conservation and thus has long faced serious soil erosion. For nearly 50 years, however, soil erosion has received effective treatment in Tibet thanks to comprehensive measures such as afforestation and waterworks construction. In recent years, particularly, both the state and the autonomous region have intensified investment in the treatment of soil erosion, which has yielded satisfactory results. By the end of 2001, the state had put 36.8 million yuan in Tibet, planting 53,000 hectares of forests and growing 67,000 hectares of grass, covering 1,166 square km for water and soil conservation. Meanwhile, the small watershed comprehensive treatment project in Radoi Gully, Quxu County, Lhasa City was launched and comprehensive treatment for water erosion in other counties such as Gyangze and Nyemo was unfolded.
