The Laid-off Will Show the Way to Travelers
Adjust font size:

Travelers will enjoy a free guide service at the Shanghai Railway Station from September, the Labor and Social Security Bureau in Zhabei District announced on Friday.

The district has created the new jobs for laid-off middle-aged workers who will direct travelers in the station.

"The creation of the new jobs will also cut out those people who try to charge money for directing people - sometimes even misdirecting after being paid," said Xujun, an official with the district's bureau.

To solve the problem, Shanghai Railway Station management established a volunteer group to offer services for free near the station last year. This pilot project has now resulted in this new service.

"As well these guide jobs can provide middle-aged laid-off workers a chance at employment again," Xu said.

The bureau has also launched a career training program for the guides. The government funded program has attracted 31 applicants, who have signed up to become professional guides at the station.

Most of the applicants are members of the volunteer group and have worked as amateur guides at the station for more than one year.

The training program, which will begin later this month, will concentrate on making the guides aware of facilities near the station as well as hotels, shopping malls, hospitals and scenic spots.

"Most tourists will ask about transport so the guides will have to memorize the roads and facilities nearby," Xu said.

Communication skills will also be taught - guides will learn to use the word "we" rather than "I" to imply a friendly relationship.
