Two people were injured when a light aircraft flew into power lines near the Hartbeespoort dam in South Africa's North West province on Thursday.

 

Netcare 911 spokesman Mark Stokoe said that an instructor and his student had been attempting an emergency landing for training purposes when the accident happened.

 

"They were aiming to land on an open field but flew into power lines which could not be seen from the air. The aircraft broke all the power lines and nose-dived into the ground," said Stokoe.

 

A helicopter was called to attend to the scene.

 

The pilot was taken by the helicopter to Milpark hospital in Johannesburg while the student was taken by an ambulance to the Pardekraal hospital in Krugersdorp.
