More Money to Control Offshore Pollution
Shenzhen city in south China's Guangdong province will set aside nearly one billion yuan (US$120 million) for pollution control in its three major offshore areas during the 10th five-year-plan period (2001-2005), sources in the city government said Monday.

The investment is expected to be spent on construction of a new sewage treatment plant at Yantian, Dapeng Bay, two new sewage treatment works and an extension project of the existing sewage treatment plant at Shenzhen Bay, as well as construction of a new sewage treatment plant at the estuary of the Pearl River.

"It is critical to step up construction of sewage treatment facilities in offshore areas of water sourcing, and improve related auxiliary administrative networks, and actively harness rivers so that the least polluted water flows into the sea," said a city official.

He expressed the belief that strict restrictions should also be placed on the loading and unloading of serious pollutants in port areas.
