The wise broad forehead and determined eyes behind the glasses reflect the character of Zhong Nanshan, director of the Center for Respiratory Diseases in Guangdong Province, who has devoted himself to SARS research.
They appear in a 50cm by 60cm wash portrait painting of the scientist by Chinese artist Yuan Xikun, curator of Beijing-based Jintai Gallery, and the US artist Donita Lloyd.
The two jointly painted the portrait last weekend in Los Angeles to express their appreciation for what Zhong has done in the battle against SARS.
"Zhong is just one model. The portrait also is dedicated to all the medical personnel in the world on the frontline of the battle,'' said Lloyd.
She also wrote on the bottom left of the portrait: "God praises those who serve courageously.''
Upon invitation, Yuan left Beijing for North America in April to exhibit his work. The artist, who has painted portraits of more than 160 Chinese and foreign celebrities, was inspired by the Chinese people's fight against the epidemic.
"I was deeply moved by the medical personnel's devotion and selflessness,'' he said. "As a painter, I wanted to express my thanks and support with my brush.''
After arriving in the United States, he talked about the doctors' work to Donita, who was also touched by their sacrifice. They decided to paint together.
"SARS is a great challenge for Chinese people, American people and everyone else in the world. I admire the Chinese medical profession's courage and devotion and believe they will win the battle eventually,'' she said.
Yuan and Donita are also planning another painting titled "In the name of Florence Nightingale,'' featuring nurses from all over the world.
