Iraqi PM Says No Border Dispute with Kuwait
Adjust font size:

Visiting Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki said Tuesday that there was no border dispute between his country and Kuwait, the official KUNA news agency reported.

Maliki made the remarks at a news briefing on the occasion of his current visit to Kuwait, pointing to an agreement between Iraq and Kuwait on putting an end to all technical issues bearing on the bilateral sea borders.

In addition, Iraq will send an ambassador to Kuwait "very soon," he said, noting that the delay in sending an ambassador was only due to finding an appropriate site.

Talking about the situation in Iraq, he held remnants of the deposed Iraqi ruling regime and al-Qaida organization responsible for bloody violence in his country.

"Terrorist organizations in Iraq target all political and sectarian forces and factions. Terrorism does not discriminate between Shiites, Sunnites or Kurds as it targets the entire political process," he was quoted as saying.

Maliki called on Iraq's neighboring countries not to poke their noses into the internal affairs of the country.

Asked if Kuwait could relieve Iraq's debt burdens, he said "Kuwait has helped (Iraq) so much. We know that Kuwait is a state of establishments, so a piece of legislation is required for Kuwait to write off Iraq's debts."

Concerning the conferences of the International Compact for Iraq and Iraq's neighboring countries due to be held in the Egyptian Red Sea resort of Sharm El-Sheikh in early May, he said they aimed to provide political, security and economic support for Iraq and to direct the political process in the right direction.

Maliki hoped that the conferences would produce concrete steps that could contribute to the success of the new Iraqi experiment and help the Iraqi people find a way out of their current distress.

The Iraqi prime minister arrived in Kuwait on Tuesday for a two-day official visit.
