Chinese Grottoes: The Mogao Caves in Dunhuang

The Chinese Grottoes: The Mogao Caves in Dunhuang, commonly referred to as the Five-Volume Edition, was compiled by the Dunhuang Cultural Relics Research Institute (renamed "Dunhuang Academy" in the second edition) and published in collaboration with the Cultural Relics Publishing House and Japan's HEIBON-SHA. Prof. Ji Xianlin wrote a preface titled Everlasting Sino-Japanese Friendship, reflecting on the long-standing friendly exchanges between the people of China and Japan over thousands of years, affirming that this series is a product of Sino-Japanese friendship. The book won the First National Special Golden Award for Art Books in 1991 and the First National Book Award in 1994, both in China.

The first five volumes of this series include colored sculptures and murals of the Mogao Caves from different periods, with accompanying representative articles by noted Chinese and Japanese researchers. This work serves as a significant summary of the research achievements related to the Dunhuang Caves in the 1980s, which marked a groundbreaking period in the field.

《中國(guó)石窟：敦煌莫高窟》，俗稱“五卷本”，由敦煌文物研究所（第二版更名為“敦煌研究院”）編著、文物出版社與日本平凡社合作出版。季羨林為其撰寫(xiě)序言《中日友誼，萬(wàn)古長(zhǎng)青》，回顧了中日兩國(guó)人民長(zhǎng)達(dá)幾千年的友好交往，肯定了這套叢書(shū)是中日友誼的結(jié)晶。該書(shū)于1991年獲中國(guó)“首屆全國(guó)美術(shù)圖書(shū)特別金獎(jiǎng)”，1994年獲中國(guó)“首屆國(guó)家圖書(shū)獎(jiǎng)”。本叢書(shū)第一卷至第五卷收錄了敦煌莫高窟不同時(shí)期的彩塑和壁畫(huà)，并附有幾位中日學(xué)者的代表性論文。這是20世紀(jì)80年代對(duì)敦煌石窟研究成果的一次高度總結(jié)，具有劃時(shí)代的意義。
