Box-Shaped Pagodas Inscribed with Buddhist Scriptures at Kaiyuan
Temple in Chaozhou of Guangdong Province The two stone pagodas are located in the famous Kaiyuan Temple in Chaozhou.

The pagodas stand parallel to each other in the square near the entrance to the main hall and look like two watchtowers. They are square and 4.2 meters high. Their bases are each formed by three layers of stone and topped by a Sumeru pedestal. The surbase is also a Sumeru pedestal carved with four statues of Buddha on each of its four sides. The main body is a square stone block covered with carvings. The four corners of the roof are in the shape of banana leaves. The steeple used to be an inverted bowl and five discs, but the bowl is now missing. From the style of the two pagodas they are works of the Ming Dynasty, but parts were destroyed and rebuilt at the end of the Qing Dynasty and later.
