Beijingers will not be possibly satisfied with urban traffic situations in the coming five years, despite the blueprint that the carrying capability of road networks will be up 30 percent at that time.
Gu Shengli, deputy director of the municipal communications commission, said that in the year of 2010, motor vehicles will have an average speed of about 20 km per hour at main Beijing roads.
Beijing has undergone severe traffic jams in the past two years, especially at the second and fourth ring roads.
Statistics provided by the communications commission show that Beijing has seen a rise of 1.36 million motor vehicles in the past three years, or an increase of 1,000 per month. Beijing will have 2.59 million motor vehicles by the end of this year, and the number will jump to 3.2 million in 2008, and 3.5 million in 2010.
Gu acknowledged that Beijing will go on giving priority to public traffic as buses and tramlines.
Trolley bus lines in Beijing are expected to reach 300 km in 2010, said Gu.
