Beijing's Court Adapts Facilities for Disabled

Beijing No.1 Intermediate People's Court recently set up non-obstacle facilities for the disabled, setting a good example for its city counterparts.

The court now has an obstacle free corridor leading to its mainhall, wheelchairs in the reception room and washrooms to suit the disabled.

The facilities are all marked by an internationally used "non-obstacle sign" to attract the attention of the disabled.

Statistics show that the disabled population of the city is now 415,000. To give the disabled better services and care, the municipal government this year pledged to make all its urban facilities accessible to the physically disabled before the end of 2002.

The city has already paved special walkways for the blind in over 20 streets to a total length of more than 170 kilometers. Over 10 stadiums and recreational centers now have improved accessibility for the disabled.

In addition, more than 20 newly-built underground passageways and overbridges are sloping design which makes it easier for the wheelchair-bound.
