Twenty-one students died and 47 injured in an accident inside a middle school building in north China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region Monday evening.
The accident occurred at 6:50 pm in the No. 2 Middle School of Fengzhen City. The guardrail along the stairs inside the building suddenly collapsed when the students began to leave after having finished their courses.
All the injured have been hospitalized.
Local officials immediately rushed to the scene to organize the rescue work. More than 260 medical workers and 12 ambulances were sent to the site to save victimized students.
Special teams have been established to investigate into the cause of and to deal with the aftermath of the accident.
