China, Romania Sign Joint Statement

China and Romania signed a joint statement on Sunday, pledging to establish an "all-round friendly and cooperative partnership" between the two countries.

The statement, signed by visiting Chinese President Hu Jintao and Romanian President Ion Iliescu, said the two countries will work to further push forward their close relations.

Both sides agreed that the traditional friendly relations between the two countries conform to the common aspiration and fundamental interests of the two peoples and conduce to regional and world peace and development, the statement said.

Romania reiterated its adherence to the one-China policy. Romania acknowledged that there is only one China in the world and Taiwan is an inalienable part of China and recognizes the Government of the People's Republic of China as the sole legal government of China, the statement said.

Romania said it will not have any official contacts with the Taiwan authorities and will not support Taiwan's bid to join any international organizations in which only a sovereign country can be a member.

The two leaders agreed to promote their economic and trade cooperation. The statement said the two governments will encourage enterprises from both sides to invest in or cooperate with the other side, especially in the fields of information, communication technology, infrastructure, agriculture, and environment.

Both sides pledged to strengthen their cooperation in culture, tourism and judicial affairs. China agreed to designate Romania as the tourist destination country for Chinese citizens and welcomes Romania to open tourists office in Beijing, the statement said.

The joint statement said that terrorism is a serious threat to world peace and development. Condemning terrorism in all forms, the two sides called on the international community to strengthen coordination and cooperation in the fight against terrorism.

China and Romania also pledged to reinforce their consultations and cooperation in the combat against terrorism, organized crimes, illegal immigration, drug-trafficking and trafficking of arms.

Chinese President Hu arrived in Romania on Saturday for a three-day state visit.
