10 Trapped Miners Dead

The 10 miners trapped in Sunday’s coalmine collapse near Beijing are dead.

Xinhua News Agency’s Chinese edition reported that the miners were found dead in the mine at about 9:00 PM on Thursday.

China News Service, another Chinese-language source, indicated that the miners were found alive at 9:37 PM and died after being rushed to the hospital.

The miners were trapped for approximately 100 hours in the collapsed mine. At least four attempts to get oxygen to them failed.

The rescue headquarters said it had confirmed that eight of the victims were migrant workers from southwestern China’s Sichuan Province.

The accident occurred Sunday morning at the Da’anshan Coalmine in Fangshan District, 90 kilometers from downtown Beijing, when 16 miners were working underground.

The local government has ordered that a special team be set up to determine the cause of the accident.
