China has kicked off the construction of all 11 urban wastewater treatment plants on the upper reaches of the Huaihe River, one of the seven major rivers in China.
This marks a major step that Henan Province, central China, has made in harnessing urban water pollution, local sources said.
The 1,100-km Huaihe River, originating from the Tongbo Mountains in Henan, flows through Henan, Anhui, Shandong and Jiangsu provinces, and eventually empties into the Yangtze River, China’s longest river.
The 11 projects are among the 18 projects Henan Province has launched to tackle water pollution in urban areas. The 18 projects, with a combined handling capacity of 1.99 million tons daily, will cost 3.53 billion yuan (US$425) to complete.
China has launched many projects to harness the flood-prone Huaihe River since 1949, which now faces serious water pollution.
