Construction of China's first subway line in Beijing started on July 1, 1965 and was completed on October 1, 1969. 21 kilometers in length, the line had 16 stations. The line came into service officially on January 15, 1971. Passengers had to show a recommendation letter from their work department to buy a ticket, which cost 1 jiao (0.1 RMB).
