Sixty retired metro carriages from Beijing have been sent to Guangyuan City in Sichuan Province so they can be used as dormitories for students in earthquake-ravaged areas, Beijing Youth Daily reported Thursday.
The 2nd Beijing Metro Co started to deliver the carriages starting on July 7 after the devastating earthquake hit Sichuan and neighboring areas in May.
The last 12 subway cars arrived in Guangyuan on Wednesday.
The carriages have been modified for dormitory use and include bunk beds, the report said
The price of a new subway car made in Changchun in northeastern China is about US$400,000, the newspaper said.
