National political advisors from Hong Kong and Macao special administrative regions told reporters on Wednesday afternoon that they support the national security legislation and believe it is necessary.

Eliza Chan Ching-har, a member of the 13th National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) from Hong Kong and a senior consultant of the Hong Kong legal arm of accounting firm Deloitte, spoke to reporters at the Great Hall of the People before the closing of the third plenary session of the country's top political advisory body.

"The National People's Congress (NPC) made a decision on establishing and improving the legal system and enforcement mechanisms for the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) to safeguard national security. This decision is very necessary and timely for the maintenance of national security. We firmly embrace and support it," Chan said.

As a CPPCC member and a lawyer in Hong Kong, Chan explained that she is obliged to publicize and interpret this decision, work harder to cement popular support for its enforcement, and make unremitting efforts to promote the successful practice of "one country, two systems".

"I firmly believe that Hong Kong will restart again, and the future will be better," she said.

Chief Executive of Hong Kong Carrie Lam said the day before on Tuesday that the national legislature's national security legislation for Hong Kong is in strict accordance with the Constitution and the Basic Law, and that the HKSAR government will fully support the legislation. Meanwhile, the number of Hong Kong residents signing a petition in support of the national security legislation had surpassed 1.1 million as of Tuesday evening.

The draft decision on national security legislation for Hong Kong was submitted to the third session of the 13th NPC for deliberation.

The Macao Special Administrative Region (Macao SAR) completed the legislating of the law on safeguarding national security in 2009, and set up the Macao SAR Safeguarding National Security Commission in 2018, explained Chui Sai Cheong, a political adviser from Macao and vice president of the SAR's Legislative Assembly.

Last year marked the 20th anniversary of the implementation of the Basic Law of the Macao SAR, and great achievements have been made in the successful practice of "one country, two systems" with Macao characteristics in accordance with the Constitution and its basic law.

Macao has benefited substantially from the "one country, two systems" principle. The Macao SAR government, together with all sectors of society, has actively promoted the Constitution and the Basic Law of Macao, which are also an essential part of local school education, Chui pointed out, adding that as people learn more about these documents, they show more support.

"Citizens of Macao have deeply realized that the SAR's development cannot be separated from  the motherland's care and support. I believe that Macao will follow on its path, that is, the path of 'one country, two systems,' and develop with greater achievements and a brighter future," he added.
