A series of about 100 moderate earthquakes over the past four days has affected more than 140,000 people in Yingjiang county, Yunnan Province. However, no injuries have been reported.

According to the Yunnan Earthquake Monitoring Center, the first quake occurred on Saturday, and the most recent came Tuesday morning.

There were 100 earthquakes in the county by 9 am Tuesday, all of which were below 5.0 magnitude.

Zuo Qiangguo, a vice director of the publicity department in Yingjiang county, told the Global Times that as of 12 pm Tuesday, 148,000 people had been affected, and 24,242 houses had been damaged. Zuo said the earthquake caused economic losses of 49.6 million yuan ($7.5 million).

Zuo said the local government is strengthening relief work, as most people are living in tents and most factories and shops have ceased operating.

Feng Yinxi, the headmaster of Yingjiang First Secondary School, told the Global Times that a school collapsed and others were damaged. Classes in Feng's school were suspended for two days to ensure the safety of students.

A local resident surnamed Li told the Global Times that he felt the ground shaking over the past few days.

Li has been living in a tent with his family since Sunday, and has not been told when he can return home. "I am very worried that a more serious earthquake will strike our county and take away many lives and property," Li said.

An official surnamed Gu from the Yunnan Earthquake Monitoring Center said that moderate earthquakes might strike Yingjiang county continuously over the next days.

However, earthquakes over 5.0 magnitude will not occur, Gu said.
