Farmers in Beijing whose crops have been damaged by wild animals can now receive compensation from the local government. According to a regulation by the Beijing municipal government, as much as 80 percent of the total loss can be recovered.

An official from the Beijing Wild Animal Protection Station told Beijing Daily that up to now, six mountainous counties (Changping, Pinggu, Mentougou, Yanqing, Huairou, and Miyun) have received compensation applications from farmers.

"These applications show that most of the losses were caused by boars, but badgers were also a nuisance," said an official from Yanqing County. In addition to crop failure caused by wild animals, fowl losses caused by eagle, wildcat and weasel attacks will also be compensated.

No attacks on humans were reported.

It is the first time such a regulation has been implemented in Beijing. All auditing work will be completed by the end of this month and compensation payments will be allocated next month.
