Tokyo stocks rebounded Friday for the first time in four days following the overnight rebound on Wall Street and a softer yen relative to the U.S. dollar.
The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average was up 223.75 points, or 2. 72 percent, from Thursday to 8,462.39.
The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange was up 9.38 points, or 1.12 percent, to 846. 91.
Tokyo stocks started sharply higher in the morning session, with all 33 sectors on the TSE advancing, but their gains were trimmed in the afternoon.
By sector, mining and rubber product issues topped the list of gainers, while major losers included real estate, retailer and banking issues.
