Toyota Mobility Tokyo, a car sales subsidiary of Toyota Motor Corporation, was warned by Japan's Fair Trade Commission (JFTC) on Thursday for suspected violations of the Antimonopoly Act through tied sales practices involving popular new car models.

The company, which operates around 200 dealerships in Tokyo, allegedly required customers to purchase additional services such as body coating to prevent dirt accumulation and maintenance packages as a condition for buying popular vehicles.

In addition to the bundling of services, the company also pressured customers to finance through group-affiliated auto loans or trade in their existing vehicles.

The practices reportedly occurred from at least June 2023 until around November 2024, when customer complaints and internal scrutiny from Toyota Motor Corporation forced the practices to cease.

The JFTC has called on Toyota and relevant industry associations to ensure thorough compliance with the law among their sales networks.
